Summer 2023 Updates

Summer is here and it feels so good! I’ve just returned from Denali, the land of eternal snow, and I couldn’t be happier to be wearing shorts and sandals! But more on that shortly.

Rewinding the clock, in April I passed the AMGA Advanced Ski Guide Course. I learned a lot from seasoned ski guide pro’s, Evan Stevens and Anna Keeling, and had some great (and also some not so great) skiing along the way.

After that it was off to Alaska where I guided 2 expeditions up the West Buttress of Denali. We encountered some of the worst weather seen up there in a number of years and despite being well positioned on the mountain, we didn’t get a weather window we could summit in on either trip. Character was built and good times were had nonetheless.

My friend and fellow Denali guide Tom and I had grand plans on skiing Denali in between guided trips, but because of the weather we pivoted and skied the Eklutna Traverse instead. This is a 40 mile, 5 day hut to hut ski tour that travels the glaciated Chugach mountains between Anchorage and Girdwood. We had challenging weather on this one as well, but it was a fantastic adventure.

I’m back in Boulder now and am staying busy guiding rock and alpine climbing for Colorado Mountain School. I have availability mid and late August and September. Now is a great time to alpine climb in Rocky Mountain National Park, learn to trad climb in Eldorado state park or Boulder Canyon, or just climb a flatiron. Reach out directly asap if interested!

Best,

Kyle
